Why A Simple Church? Shouldn’t the church have multiple programs to meet my needs?
A simple church is my way of saying a church that sticks to the basics of the Christian life. Programs can include the basics, but generally they can become hindrances to the mission of the church when they become inward focused.
Our mission as a church is to make disciples. While disciple does mean a learner and specifically one who is learning to follow Jesus, following Jesus is an active pursuit of becoming more like him in the context of a community of believers seeking to do the same thing. Thus, whatever program or programs a church does must conform to a simple question–will this equip us to serve Jesus? Yes, it is all about serving Jesus, not about serving ourselves. This means, according to Jesus, that the world will know we are his disciples if we have love one to another.
Our focus is building the basics into our lives as individuals and families. The gathering of God’s people is not for our entertainment. It is to understand our responsibilities as God’s family and exercise them together as we worship Him.
If your reason for coming to church is a particular program, music, or teaching, for your children, your wife, or yourself then what did Jesus mean when he said
If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. 27 Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.(Luke 14:26-27)
Jesus has made it clear that being his disciple costs us everything to follow him.
The basics of the Christian life are simple–Bible study, prayer, worship, service, and stewardship. These basics are necessary to grow in Christ to maturity.
